Brownsville is a city located in the state of Texas, in the United States. Brownsville is known as one of the most southernmost points in the U.S., as it sets very close to the border of Mexico. Brownsville TX History

When Texas won its independence from Mexico in 1835, the Rio Grande River was used as the border between the two nations. With Brownsville sitting just to the Eastern side of the river, it became the property of Texas and, eventually, the United States. Brownsville was originally named after war hero Major Jacob Brown. After being founded in 1848, Brownsville would soon become a major city after the outbreak of the U.S. Civil War. The city became a major exporter of cotton and other war goods, boosting the economy and population of the area. Even after the war ended, Brownsville remained a prosperous city.
