Pinchot's breakthrough part came in 1984's Beverly Hills Cop, where he played the stylish Serge, who he'd again appear as in Beverly Hills Cop III years later.

That role helped him get cast in the ABC sitcom Perfect Strangers, which featured Pinchot in what is to date his signature character, Balki Bartokomous. Hailing from the fictional island of Mypos, Balki's joyous and positive persona made him the anchor of the show during its eight-year run from 1986 to 1993.

Pinchot was also added to the cast of another ABC sitcom, Step by Step, when one of its original leads, Sasha Mitchell, was dismissed from the show.

While guest appearing in other TV shows throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, Pinchot also performed on Broadway alongside Richard Dreyfuss and Eric Stoltz in Sly Fox. In 2005, he was a cast member on The Surreal Life during its fifth season.
