Bronchitis is an inflammation of the air passages, specifically known as the bronchi, in the lungs. When a person has bronchitis, they experience coughing, shortness of breath, and a tightening of the chest. Treatment is contingent on the type of bronchitis a person has.
Bronchitis can either be acute or chronic. While acute bronchitis is usually caused by common viruses, chronic bronchitis is a type of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
