Bronchitis is a respiratory infection of the air passages in the lungs characterized by a persistent cough. There are two forms of bronchitis: acute and chronic. Acute bronchitis typically lasts less than six weeks; chronic bronchitis, which can include long-term diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The type of treatment administered for bronchitis depends on the type. Treatments for acute bronchitis may include medications to relieve symptoms, including cough and fever. Antibiotics are typically not given, except in cases where someone is at a high risk for complications, including pneumonia. Symptoms of acute bronchitis may include:

1. Persistent cough; may begin as a dry cough and progress to a mucus-producing cough
