Broad Peak is located on the border of Pakistan and China, near the city of Islamabad, Pakistan. It is the 12th-highest mountain on Earth. It got it's name from its exceptionally wide summit which is about a mile wide. Broad Peak is part of the Karakoram Range along the Baltoro Glacier. It's difficult climb makes it popular with experienced mountain climbers.
Climbing the Mountain
Broad Peak was first ascended by Marcus Schmuck and a team of four other men on June 9, 1957. Hermann Buhl, one of the men on the expedition, fell to his death while attempting to climb the nearby Chogolisa peak on June 27, 1957.
An Austrian mountaineering team climbed the peak in 2007 to retrieve the body of Markus Kronthaler. Kronthaler died on the mountain the year before while trying to make the climb.
