The nominees for the 2009 BRIT Awards were announced in January 2009. Coldplay and Duffy led the nominees with four each.
Duffy won three awards, including British Female Solo Artist, British Breakthrough Act and Album of the Year for Rockferry. The Kings of Leon won International Group and International Album for Only By the Night. Coldplay were shut out. The Pet Shop Boys, who received the Outstanding Contribution to music award, performed at the ceremony. Other performers included Coldplay, Kings of Leon, Duffy and Girls Aloud.
