Bristol Palin made headlines during the 2008 presidential election when it was revealed that she was pregnant with a child. The father of her child is Levi Johnston, who Bristol had then been dating. Now Bristol Palin can be seen staring in her own public service announcement encouraging young people to not become pregnant.
Breakdown of the PSA
The commercial opens with a scene of Bristol standing with her child in her arms. The location she is standing in appears to be a well-decorated house. With the baby clearly heard crying in the background, Bristol asks, "What if I didn't come from a famous family?" At that point, the video cuts to multiple images of newspapers, television screens, and a picture of her mother, Sarah Palin holding a baby.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtcm9R-J3Bk
Then Bristol asks, "What if I didn't have all their support?" Again, there is a sudden cut from the scene while a few still images are shown one after another. With "their" referring to her family, the pictures shown are all of her different family members each holding a baby. It is ostensibly Bristol's baby that they are each holding in the photos. After this, Bristol poses one last question, "What if I didn't have all these opportunities?"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtcm9R-J3Bk
Showing the opportunities that she has been given, the video now cuts again, showing shots of her getting makeup applied, graduating from high school, and screenshots of photos of her being airbrushed in an editing program. With the camera now completely zoomed in and trained on her face, Bristol apparently offers an answer to her own questions: "Believe me: It wouldn't be pretty."http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtcm9R-J3Bk
The camera now zooms back out revealing Bristol, her baby standing on the ground, and an apartment that looks nearly empty. The now nearly empty apartment is used to show how things could have been, as she was alluding to previously in the PSA. A few seconds pass before the camera again zooms in on her face at which point she finally says, "Pause, before you play."http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtcm9R-J3Bk In other words, it appears that she is saying to young people that they ought to think seriously before they have sexual intercourse. Bristol therefore uses the term "play" instead of "intercourse."
