Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, Australia, is named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, who was governor of New South Wales from 1821 to 1825. It is the third most populous city in Australia. The city was the South West Pacific headquarters for General Douglas MacArthur during World War II. Culturally, Brisbane is home to the Queensland Performing Arts Complex, which encompasses several different theatres and a concert hall. The ballet and opera also perform at the complex. In 2007 Brisbane was nominated as one of the Top 5 International Music Hotspots by Billboard magazine.
