Brigadoon

Categories: Entertainment | Movies
  • Brigadoon is a musical about a magical village in Scotland that appears for one day every hundred years.

Two American tourists, played by Gene Kelly and Van Johnson, stumble upon the village while on vacation in Scotland. Kelly falls in love with one of the villagers played by Cyd Charisse.

The musical's book and lyrics were written by Alan Jay Lerner with music by Frederick Lowe. The story is loosely based on Friedrich Gerstacker's story about the mythical German village of Germelshausen. Adapted by Lerner shortly after World War II, he shifted the action to Scotland to avoid any association with the former enemy.

The original Broadway production of Brigadoon premiered at the Ziegfeld Theater in 1947, where it ran for 581 performances. The film was released in 1954 and would be followed by three separate Broadway revivals in 1957, 1963 and 1980.
