Brian Westbrook is a running back for the San Francisco 49ers. Prior to joining the 49ers in August of 2010, Westbrook had played his entire career for the Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL. Westbrook was released by the Eagles on February 23, 2010, following a tough 2009 season in which he missed half of the 16 regular season games due to recurring concussion issues. Westbrook signed with the 49ers on August 17, 2010 after the team backup Glen Coffee abruptly retired the week before. Regarding the running back roster, 49ers coach Mike Singletary said that current running back Frank Gore would remain the starting player. NFL Career
Brian Westbrook was drafted by the Eagles in 2002. In 2003, Westbrook scored a total of 11 touchdowns, but missed the playoffs after an injury in the final regular-season game. He returned as the starter in 2004, helping the Eagles go 13-3 on their way to the Super Bowl. Westbrook rushed for 44 yards and caught seven passes for 60 yards and a touchdown against the Patriots in the championship game. He earned his first Pro Bowl selection in 2004, a feat which he repeated again in 2007. Following the 2004 season, Westbrook signed a contract extension with the Eagles through 2010.
Westbrook battled several injuries during the 2008 regular season. He missed an October 12, 2008, game against the San Francisco 49ers after breaking his ribs.
