Major League Baseball outfielder Brian Giles plays for the San Diego Padres. Giles has been named to the All-Star Team twice.
On December 24, 2008, Brian Giles released a statement through his lawyers regarding a lawsuit against the outfielder which claims that Giles owes $10 million dollars to his ex-girlfriend Cheri Olvera. Giles stated, "I categorically deny each and every allegation of the complaint for palimony. This is all about money. The marriage never took place because the plaintiff changed her mind about a prenuptial agreement. The statement that I promised before marriage to divide my property to plaintiff if we ever separated or died is nonsense." Olvera also claims that Giles physically abused her and caused a miscarriage of their unborn child.ESPN.com: Giles says lawsuit 'all about money' (December 24, 2008)
Brief Biography
A native of the San Diego area, Giles began his Major League career with the Cleveland Indians in 1995. However, Giles did not receive significant playing time until the 1997 season. Giles put up respectable numbers in both 1997 and 1998, but it was not until his postseason trade to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1998, that his career really began to take off. In 1999 and 2000, Giles had arguably the two best seasons of his career, hitting exactly .315 in each season, with over 35 home runs, and over 115 RBIs each year.
Trade to Padres
Despite numbers like these, in 2003, the Pirates traded Giles to the San Diego Padres for two not-too-shabby players: outfielder Jason Bay and pitcher Oliver Perez. In San Diego, Giles was home, but his numbers have been down since 2004. In 2007, the Padres signed free agent Marcus Giles—Brian's younger brother—and the two now both play regularly for the team.
Sued for Abuse
In December of 2008, Giles was sued for $10 million by ex-girlfriend Cheri Olvera. Olvera claims that in 2002, Giles physically abused her while she was pregnant with his child, which caused a miscarriage.FanHouse: Brian Giles Allegedly Beat His Pregnant Girlfriend...
