  • On May 14, 2008, Florida authorities arrested Brian Crowder in connection with wildfires that have scorched tens of thousands of acres along the state's Atlantic coast.

    Authorities said the 31-year-old Crowder was captured after a brief police chase that began when a resident reportedly saw him toss an accelerant from his car into a field near the fire-ravaged town of Palm Bay.

    Crowder was being held on multiple probation violations, arson-related charges had not been filed.

    Police describe Crowder as a "person of interest" in the massive Palm Bay fire, which has destroyed at least 22 homes and damaged dozens more.

    Florida Governor Charlie Crist declared a state of emergency on Monday, May 12, 2008, as crews continued to battle blazes in several areas. Officials said they continue to track down thousands of leads, and they do suspect the majority of the blazes were deliberately set.
