Favre retired from the Green Bay Packers in 2008, then came out of retirement to play for the New York Jets. He retired again after the 2008 season and announced that he would remain retired on July 28, 2009.

On August 3, 2010, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported that Favre had decided to retire. Favre did not immediately comment on the story. Favre led the Vikings to a 12-4 record in the 2009 National Football League season, finishing second in the American Football Conference. Earning a first-round bye in the NFL Playoffs, the Cowboys VikingsVikings overpowered the Dallas Cowboys 34-3 in the NFL Divisional Weekend.
Minnesota however fell to the New Orleans Saints 31-28 in overtime in the NFC Championship Game.
