Brett Favre Jets

On August 6, 2008, three-time MVP NFL Quarterback Brett Favre was traded to the New York Jets from Green Bay for a future draft pick. NFL Quarterback Brett Favre is now considering playing for the Minnesota Vikings

Though Favre had reported to the Packers' training camp to compete for the starting quarterback position, sports analysts had overwhelmingly speculated that he would be traded, either to the Jets or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In the late evening on August 6, FOXSports.com reported that a deal had been reached. The tentative deal may be for a third-round draft pick, which would elevate to a first-round draft pick based on the Jets' performance with Favre in the 2008-09 season.

Quarterbacks of a Different Color

Favre isn't the first great quarterback to finish his career in an unfamiliar uniform. Here are a few more legends who changed jerseys before hanging them up for good:

  • After winning four Super Bowl|Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers, Joe Montana suited up for the Kansas City Chiefs from 1993-1995.
  • Johnny Unitas played for the Baltimore Colts for 16 years, winning the 1958 NFL Championship game in what is still often considered "the greatest game ever played." He played his last season with the San Diego Chargers in 1973.
  • Joe Namath was the face of the New York Jets from the mid-1960s through the 1970s. He famously guaranteed a victory against Unitas' favored Colts in Super Bowl III. It was his only Super Bowl victory, though he stayed with the Jets until his final season, when he played for the Los Angeles Rams.

Quotes

  • "Brett has had a long and storied career in Green Bay, and the Packers owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude for everything he accomplished on the field and for the impact he made in the state. It is with some sadness that we make this announcement, but also with the desire for certainty that will allow us to move the team and organization forward in the most positive way possible."—Packers CEO Mike Murphy
