  • Early Career

    Sopel began his career in the Western Hockey League, playing for the Saskatoon Blades and the Swift Current Broncos. He was drafted 144th overall in the 1995 NHL Draft by the Vancouver Canucks. Sopel then joined the Syracuse Crunch in the American Hockey League for his first few years of conditioning. In 1998, Sopel made his NHL debut with the Canucks, playing in just five games before returning to the minors. During the 2001-02 regular season, Sopel earned a full roster spot on the Canucks, playing 66 regular and six playoff games.
  • Recent Years

    On August 3, 2005, Sopel was traded to the New York Islanders. Seven months later he was traded again, going to the Los Angeles Kings. He spent just short of a full season with the Kings, then was traded back to the Vancouver Canucks on February 26, 2007. Sopel completed the 2006-07 regular season in Vancouver, then signed as a free agent with the Chicago Blackhawks during the off season.
