Early NHL Career
Shanahan was drafted out of the Ontario Hockey League where he played for the London Knights by the New Jersey Devils in 1987. He stayed with the Devils through the 1990-91 season. On July 25, 1991 he signed as a free agent with the St. Louis Blues. He earned his first NHL All-Star Game selection with the Blues, before heading to the Hartford Whalers for a single season in 1995.
