Breast Implants

  • Breast implants are prosthetic breasts that are implanted in order to enlarge a person's breast size. A person may undergo breast implant surgery for cosmetic reasons, to reconstruct the breasts following a surgery or to alter a genetic deformity.

There are four types of breast implants that have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States. Mentor and Allergen's saline implants were approved in May 2000 for augmentation in women over 18 and reconstruction at any age. Approval for their silicon implants was granted in November 2006. However, women undergoing breast augmentation must be at least 22 years old.FDA: Breast Implant Questions and Answers (2006)
