Bratz vs. Barbie in Court
Since the premiere of Bratz, the line has cut substantially into the dominance of the Barbie fashion doll line. Where Barbie once had nearly 100% of the market, it is now down to about 60% of the fashion doll market, with Bratz taking the other 40%. Mattel sued Bratz designer Carter Bryant, alleging he developed Bratz while working at Mattel. Bratz producer MGA Entertainment has sued Mattel, claiming their My Scene line of Barbie dolls copycats the Bratz line. In August 2008, a federal jury awarded the Mattel toy company $40 million in damages in their lawsuit against MGA Entertainment Inc. Three months later, a judge ruled that MGA needed to immediately stop manufacturing the dolls. However, he also said that the company could wait until the end of the 2008 holiday season to begin removing the dolls from store shelves. The Associated Press: Judge Bars MGA From Making, Selling Bratz Dolls (December 4, 2008)
