Bratmobile was a punk rock band that formed in 1991 while Allison Wolfe and Molly Neuman were students at the University of Oregon in 1991. Their first performance was a two-woman show held on Valentine's Day, with the two women each performing on guitar, drums, and vocals. Erin Smith joined the group later that year, performing in July 1991, with Wolfe on vocals, Neuman on drums, and Smith playing guitar. Their first album, Pottymouth was released in 1993. They broke up, on stage, in 1994. From 1994-1999, the women continued to make music separately, until they agreed to reunite for one show in 1999. That show, at The Stork Club in Oakland, triggered a reunion which would last for almost four years. They released their second album, Ladies, Women, and Girls in 2000, and went on tour. Their third full length album, Girls get Busy was released in 2002. During the 1999-2004 period, the original three women were joined by other musicians, including Jon Nikki, Audrey Marrs, and Marty Violence. The band never formally dissolved, but by the end of 2003, they had each gone their separate ways.

• Alison Wolfe, January 30, 2004: "Yeah, sorry to say i (sic) think Bratmobile is through. We never had a certain incident where anyone said "I quit" or whatever, so it's been vague and drawn out. Sorry if that's been confusing to people. I think all 3 of us just have different ways of doing things and different things we want to do now, in and outside of music. Molly has just been so busy with managing the Donnas and the Locust, and as co-owner of Lookout! Records. Erin is also working full time at Lookout! Records. I've been living across the country in Washington DC, working 2 part-time jobs, and now doing other musical things. I'm now in Hawnay Troof, Baby Truth, and also a new girl band in DC called Partyline."
