Some say that Michelangelo's The Creation of Adam, a fresco painted on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, depicts an accurate cross-section of the human brain. This was first noted in the 1970's, according to Rabbi Benjamin Blech, the author of The Sistine Secrets: Michelangelo's Forbidden Messages in the Heart of the Vatican. This particular book alleges that Michelangelo hid messages in his paintings, using his knowledge of the Kabbalah and other 'mystic' Jewish writings. According to the Kabbalah, the right side of the brain represents wisdom.http://abcnews.go.com/Travel/story?id=4767118&page=1
Michaelangelo, Cadavers and the Human Brain
Michelangelo's The Creation of Adam (sometimes called The Creation of Man, is a fresco on the ceiling on the Sistine Chapel. Some experts say the painting clearly depicts an accurate image of the human brain. The way God is show in the image appears to line up with specific fissures within a human brain. The way his legs are positioned to the right seem to line up much like the way the spinal cord is situated at the bottom of the brain. The legs of one of the angels to God's left, match up with where the pituitary gland would be.http://www.thecaveonline.com/APEH/michelangelosbrain.html During Michealangelo's time, it would have been illegal to dissect a cadaver. However, this was occasionally done by those seeking to gain a better understanding of how the human body worked.http://www.kendewaard.com/Index_Medical.htm Michelangelo was said to have used cadavers for study purposes.http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Michelangelo/Philip-Wilkinson/e/9780792255338
Creation of Adam and a Cross-Section of the Human Brain
On the left is a cross section showing the right half of a human brain. The picture on the right is an image of The Creation of God, showing God reaching his hand toward man (Adam). God and the figures around him appear to be wrapped in a cloth. The shape that this creates, as well as the positions of the figure, looks similar to the human brain.
