A boysenberry is a large, maroon colored fruit with large seeds. The fruit was first cultivated in southern California by Walter Knott. Knott's family sold pies and ran a small restaurant that came to be known as Knott's Berry Farm.
The USDA reported findings of a large berry grown by Rudolph Boysen. George M. Darrow of the USDA teamed up with Walter Knott, who was considered a berry expert. Knott helped Darrow search for the berry. Together, they transplanted the vines from Boysen's abandoned farm to Knott's farm where they eventually flourished.
