Boxee

  • Boxee is a software platform that allows users to utilize video, audio and view digital photos on their laptop computer or an HDTV television. Using sources like CBS.com and Netflix for online content as well as media already on users' computers, the software provides a unique media browsing experience.

    On February 18, 2009, Hulu, citing pressure from content providers, announced that their content would no longer be available via Boxee. In a blog post, the CEO of Hulu.com, Jason Kilar, referred to the situation as maddening and stated "there is no immediate win here for users".Hulu Blog: Doing hard things (February 18, 2009)

  • Background

    Started in 2007 with a private beta test, the company launched a private alpha version in 2008. Building momentum, the software and concept was featured in a demonstration booth at CES 2009, garnering much attention from cable media as well as everyday Internet media users. Claiming a user base of 100,000 with a waiting list of an additional 100,000 at the time of the show, the founder and CEO, Avner Ronen, indicated he wants to see a user base of one million users.
