Rather than holding a playoff like other sports, college football teams play in bowl games at the conclusion of each season. In the weeks leading up to the official announcement, sports broadcasters, writers, and bloggers make their predictions as to who will play in each of the games.http://espn.go.com/college-football/bowls/projections
While many of the bowl games have specific teams they invite each season, such as affiliations with certain conferences, many of the teams, including those in the Bowl Championship Series games, will not know their fate until the selection show airs each year. Similarly, while many conferences have affiliations with certain bowl games, which team within that conference is not often known until the official announcements are made. To become eligible to play in a bowl game, teams must win at least six of their 12 games during the regular season. Should one conference not have enough eligible teams for their bowl games, another eligible team from another conference will play as a replacement.http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2424711
