Bowdoin Early History
Bowdoin College was established in 1794 by a charter from Massachusetts Governor Samuel Adams. It was named for James Bowdoin, a former Massachusetts governor. In the 1820s Franklin Pierce, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry Wasdworth Longfellow graduated from the college.
