History of Paper Towels
Paper towels were first invented by mistake in the late 1920s. Arthur Scott, head of the Scott Paper Company had received a large shipment of paper that had been rolled too thick, and was therefore useless in producing toilet paper products. Scott recalled hearing about a school teacher who made a practice of giving sick children a small piece of cloth to use when they were sick, as a means of infection control. Inspired, Scott perforated the paper, so that it tore off into small, 13” x 18” sheets. The product was named Sani-Towels and was sold to various establishments for use in their public facilities.
In 1931, Scott introduced paper towels for the kitchen to the market. Since women were satisfied with using their cloth kitchen towels, and most people were not as aware of infection control, paper towels were not widely used for several decades. http://www.ideafinder.com/history/inventions/papertowel.htm
