A bottle opener is a tool used for opening bottles with metal caps. These caps are held in place by a metal ridge or ruffle tucked under the rim of the bottle. A bottle opener will bend and lift the cap to open the bottle.
Alternatives
Almost any metal edge can be used as a bottle opener. A ring, a knife or even a spoon have been known to work.
If you are using a ring, place your palm over the cap with the hand that has the ring and hook the ring under the rim of the bottle cap. Hold onto the bottle with your free hand and pull on the bottle cap upwards. Be careful, not all rings work well when opening bottle caps. Don't apply too much pressure and hurt your finger.
When using a spoon or a knife tuck the edge of the utensil up underneath the rim of the bottle cap and pull the handle of the utensil upward.
