Botox Brain

A study released on April 2, 2008, by the Journal of Neuroscience raises concerns over the finding that Botox can travel from the injection site and into the brain. Botox is a drug made from the toxin produced by the bacteria clostridium botulinum. When injected into muscle, it causes the muscle to seize contractions. Botox is often used cosmetically, to eliminate wrinkles. The April study revealed that the toxin, after injected into the whisker muscles of lab rats, could be found in the brainstem within three days. Researchers claim more works need to be done to determine how the toxins spread along nerves.

Fast Facts:

  1. Effects of toxin on rats still present six months later
  2. Botox is used in larger does to treat muscle spasm
  3. Cosmetic doses are significantly lower
  4. Botox carries warning labels about risk of breathing and swallowing difficulty
