A member of Major League baseball since 1912, the Boston Red Sox make their home in Fenway Park located on 4 Yawkey Way next to Boston University’s sprawling campus. Besides being one of baseball’s oldest teams, the Red Sox’ Fenway Park not only the oldest baseball stadium in use, but is the oldest venue in use by any American sports team.
Founded in 1901 as a charter franchise in the American League, The Boston Red Sox were the first ever winners of a World Series, defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates 5 games to 3 in what was then a nine game program. By 1918 Boston had won four more titles and established themselves as a force to be reckoned with.
The Red Sox name was chosen by founder and owner John Taylor, inspired by the red stockings which were part of the Boston uniform. Sox was a term coined by sportswriters of the time to save using the word Stockings in their headlines. For their first seven professional seasons Boston had no nickname, and were simply known as Boston or the Bostonians.
The red stocking icon first appeared on a Boston Jersey in 1908 and has been the official moniker for the team ever since.
Boston Red Sox Jersey
This is the current home jersey for the Boston Red Sox, though not a favorite of some fans who say that the most recent alterations have been made simply to increase merchandise sales. The official jersey has changed many times since 1901, particularly in the 1920’s and 30’s when pinstripes were donned and done away with in constant rotation.
