The Boston College Eagles football team is the collegiate football program of Boston College. The team is a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, a Division I Bowl Subdivision (formerly known as Division I-A) league governed by the NCAA. Within the ACC, the Eagles are one of six teams in the Atlantic Division. They joined the league in 2005 after spending the years between 1991 and 2004 in the Big East Conference.http://www.nationalchamps.net/NCAA/database/bostoncollege_database.htm
The Eagles are coached by Frank Spaziani, who is in his second full year at the helm of coaching the club. He took over for Jeff Jagodzinski, who was fired after the 2008 season after it was revealed that he had interviewed for the then vacant New York Jets head coaching position without the permission of athletic director Gene Defilippo.http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3816644
The school plays its home games at Alumni Stadium, which is located on the Boston College campus in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. Boston College is one of only two predominantly Catholic universities to field a football team, the other being the University of Notre Dame. These two schools do battle on the gridiron annually in a rivalry known as the Holy War. On June 8, 2010, the two schools agreed to extend the rivalry between the two schools through at least 2019. Notre Dame leads the series 10-9 since it began in 1975.http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=5266114
Boston College is best known for a pair of quarterbacks in their history. Doug Flutie, he of the Heisman Trophy and the Hail Mary to teammate Gerard Phalen to stun the Miami Hurricanes and Bernie Kosar in 1984, and Matt Ryan, the first round draft choice of the Atlanta Falcons who is currently their starting quarterback, are the most well known alums of the school's program. Other notable players include Mark Chmura, Fred Smerlas, Pete Kendall, Chris Snee, Bill Romanowski, Matt Hasselbeck, Mike Holovak and Troy Stradford.
2010 Boston College Eagles Preview
The BC Eagles look to improve on last season's 8-4 regular season mark and disappointing defeat in the Emerald Bowl to the University of Southern California. The team returns fourteen starters from a year ago, eight on offense and six on defense, including three All ACC selections from 2009: running back Montel Harris, offensive tackle Anthony Costanzo and outside linebacker Luke Kuechly.http://www.nationalchamps.net/2010/earlybird/teams/bostoncollege.htm
One thing the Eagles need to do is improve their offensive numbers. They finished 98th out of 120 Division I-A schools in total offense, and 93rd in passing offense. Those numbers simply won't translate to wins, even if the defense stays relatively close to their 2009 numbers. Boston College was 14th in the nation against the run, 19th in scoring defense, and 26th in overall defense last season.http://www.bceaglesfootball.com/

A video clip of the Hail Mary from Doug Flutie to Gerald Phalen on the last play of the game against the University of Miami on November 23, 1984, giving the Eagles a stunning 47-45 victory over the Hurricanes.
