Bora Bora is a French territory in the Pacific Ocean that belongs to a collective of French islands called French Polynesia. It is surrounded by a lagoon and a barrier reef and thus it is a popular destination for scuba diving and snorkeling. Over-the-water bungalows are a well-known feature of most resorts on the island. During World War II, Bora Bora served as a military supply base and refueling dock for the United States. An airstrip built by the U.S. military was French Polynesia's only international airport until one was built in Tahiti in 1962.
