BookCrossing, is the practice of leaving a book in a public place so as to be picked up and read by others, who then, hopefully, continue the cycle by doing the same thing. This new phenomenon originated with the website, BookCrossing.com. It was created by Ron Habaker who thought of the idea in 2001 and launched a webiste in the same year.
