A bone marrow transplant is a procedure whereby stem cells from healthy bone marrow are injected into a patient whose bone marrow is not producing healthy cells. Although most people think of a bone marrow transplant as a treatment for cancer, it can also be used to treat other conditions such as hereditary blood diseases, metabolic diseases and immune deficiencies.MedlinePlus: Medical Encyclopedia - Bone Marrow Transplant
Procedure
A bone marrow transplant will usually be preceded by a conditioning regimen in order to suppress the immune system, and destroy any residual disease. The conditioning regimen may include chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. After the conditioning regimen has been completed, the healthy bone marrow will be injected into the patient using a central line.
