Bone fractures, breaks and cracks all mean the same thing, that the bone could not stand up to the pressure applied to it and the bone structure fails. Fractures can occur from falls, twisting injuries or direct blows to the bone. The description of a bone fracture is based on where in the bone the break occurred, how the fragments of the bone are aligned and if any complications exist with the broken bone. Although there are many types of bone fractures the four main categories are compound, incomplete, simple and complete. When a broken fracture punctures the skin it is called an open fracture or compound fracture.
Fast Facts:
- Most likely to occur in hip, spine or wrist
- Possible causes: Hormonal imbalances, pregnancy, metabolic diseases, [Cancer|[cancer]], or osteoporosis.
- Osteoporosis: Skeletal disorder in which bones become fragile and more likely to break
Treatment
A bone fracture requires medical treatment. Just because you still can use a arm, hand or leg does not mean that it is not broken. A medical examination and x-rays are needed to know for sure. It is important not to move a broken bone as movement can cause worse damage. No matter what bone is broken, or how severe the break is, the basic treatment involves putting the bone back in place and immobilizing it till it heals.
Prevention
Healthy bones are very strong but if put under enough pressure they will break. Bones weakened by misuse and disease will break more easily. To maintain healthy bones the proper amount of calcium is needed. It is also important to get a adequate amount of exercise. When a person is active their bones become stronger and more dense.
