Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA) is an international cooperation agreement initially proposed by the Venezuelan government to integrate the economic and political worlds of Latin America and the Caribbean. Currently, Venezuela, Cuba, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Dominica, Antigua and Barbuda, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines are members of ALBA. ALBA was created as an alternative to the neo-liberal, free trade policies of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) The members of ALBA have also considered creating a defensive military alliance to parallel their economic alliance.
