Boise is the capital of Idaho, and is also the most populous city in the state. Nicknamed the "City of Trees," Boise is currently the site of call centers, manufacturing facilities, and headquarters for numerous high-tech industries.
History
Though it is unknown exactly how the area known as Boise got its name, Fort Boise was established along the Boise River in the 1830s. Because of its prime location along the Oregon Trail, the fort grew as a mining district.
The city was incorporated in 1864, and became the capital of the state the next year.
Culture
Boise has the second largest Basque community in the United States behind Bakersfield, CA. The city is also the region's cultural center for Jazz and theater, hosting numerous festivals and theater productions every year.
Boise will host the Winter Special Olympics World Games in 2009.
