Bobby Cox is a former baseball player and the current manager of the Atlanta Braves. A native of Oklahoma, Cox had a brief playing career, with all of his time in the majors spent as the third baseman for the New York Yankees in 1968 and 1969. After a short career in MLB (nine home runs, 58 RBIs, .225 average), Cox began managing in the Yankees farm system in 1976.
Cox would go on to make his name managing the Atlanta Braves from 1990, where he would win a record 3860 regular season games during his tenure. He would lead the Braves to their first World Series title since moving to Atlanta in 1995.http://www.baseball-reference.com/managers/coxbo01.shtml
Managing Career
In 1978, Cox began his first managerial stint with the Atlanta Braves, then a struggling team which perennially finished last in the NL West. His first two seasons as manager were no different, as the Braves, again, finished last both years. However, in 1980, the Braves finished with a record above .500 for the first time since 1972.
Cox was fired by Braves owner Ted Turner during the strike-shortened 1981 season, and in 1982 began managing the also-perennially struggling Toronto Blue Jays. Under Cox, the Blue Jays fortunes turned around as their record improved. Between 1982 and 1985, the Jays steadily became a contender, until 1985 when they finished first in the AL East, winning 99 games.http://www.baseball-reference.com/managers/coxbo01.shtml Cox returned to the Braves in 1986 as general manager. In 1990, he ended up appointing himself manager of the Braves for the second time.
Managing the Braves
Cox has managed the Braves since 1990, and built them into a playoff contender. During his 19 seasons managing the team, they have finished first fourteen times in their division, won the pennant four times, and won the World Series once in 1995. In addition, the Braves have won 100 or more games six times during his second tenure with the club.http://www.baseball-reference.com/managers/coxbo01.shtml
Before the start of the 2010 season, Cox announced that it would be his final year as manager of the Braves before retiring. That season, the Braves went on to win the NL Wild Card, giving Cox the opportunity to make one final postseason run.http://www.nj.com/mets/index.ssf/2009/09/atlanta_braves_manager_bobby_c.html
Bobby Cox Ejection Record
Bobby Cox set a record in 2009 that may not be broken for many years. He broke former New York Giants manager John McGraw's record for most career ejections. No active manager is within 50 ejections of Cox's current mark. Cox is set to retire at the end of the 2010 season.
