Following the January 3, 2009, firing of Denver Broncos Head Coach Mike Shanahan, Stoops was rumored to be in the running for the coaching vacancy. In December of 2010, following the resignation of University of Florida head coach Urban Meyer, Stoops was rumored to be the frontrunner as the new head coach for the Florida Gators. Coaching Career
Stoops began his coaching career at the University of Iowa as a graduate assistant for the team there. After finishing as a graduate student, he stayed on the coaching staff until 1987 as a voluntary assistant. This helped him land a job four years later as the defensive coordinator for Kansas State University. Stoops remained in that position for five seasons as he helped turn the Wildcats' football program around. He would move on to Florida as the defensive coordinator there for three seasons. Then, in 1999, Stoops accepted the job as head coach of Oklahoma. He has remained in that position ever since.http://www.soonersports.com/school-bio/bob_stoops.html
In 12 seasons as Oklahoma's head coach, Stoops as an all-time record of 128-31. In that time, he led the program to a national championship in 2000. In 2008, Oklahoma also played in the BCS Championship Game, but lost. Florida coach Urban Meyer initially focused on talking about how his offensive coordinator, Dan Mullen, was leaving to take the head coaching job at Southern Mississippi.
