Retired United States Senator Bob Dole was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1960 and then to the U.S. Senate in 1968. Dole served as the GOP leader in 1984 and was the Republican Party’s presidential nominee in 1996. He lost the election to Bill Clinton.
A Lifetime of Service
Bob Dole entered World War II in 1942 and served in Europe as a second lieutenant in the 10th Mountain Division of the U.S. Army. He was critically injured in 1945, which ended his ambition to become a doctor. Dole changed his focus to law and politics.Bob Dole.com: World War II
Dole served as a Kansas state legislator from 1951 to 1953. He was also the Russell County Attorney from 1952 to 1960.

Bob Dole was selected by Gerald Ford as the vice-presidential nominee in the 1976 presidential election. The team lost to Jimmy Carter and Walter Mondale. Dole campaigned in the Republican party's presidential primary elections in 1980 and 1988. In 1996, he won his party's nomination against the Democratic incumbent, Bill Clinton. Life After Retirement
