Board games vary greatly in theme and game play; some are entirely based on luck (children's board games tend to fall into this category) and others require various levels of skill and strategy. They can be based on realistic human events or on pure fantasy, and often provide a good excuse for the family to gather together for a fun shared activity. The term board game has been used to represent other type of tabletop games such as card games, dexterity games, and party games.
Monopoly's Success

Since 1935, Monopoly has set the standard for successful board games with many elements that make playing it a memorable experience. There's strategy involved, but not so much that the whole family can't participate. And the distinctive game pieces, the chance cards, the threat of going "directly" to jail, and the iconic "Rich Uncle Moneybags" mascot all contribute to the game's unmatched popularity as well.
