Blueberries

Categories: Food | Fruits | Health | Nutrition
  • Blueberries are a small North American fruit that may take on a variety of colors from green to purple, and can range in taste from very tart to mildly sweet. Though indigenous to North America, blueberries are widely cultivated in South America.
  • Nutritional Benefits

Blueberries are a good source of vitamin C and dietary fiber. They are also rich in antioxidants, which studies show can prevent heart disease, glaucoma and peptic ulcers. Studies on animals suggest that blueberries may prevent brain diseases such as Alzheimer's and the memory-related conditions.
  • Cooking with Blueberries

If eating whole or making into jam, fresh blueberries will hold the most flavor. However, frozen blueberries can be used to make pies or smoothies and still contain nearly all of the nutritional benefits. Blueberry is also one of the most popular flavors of muffin.
  • Cultivation

North America produces 90% of the world's blueberries, harvest mostly between June and August. Many British growers have late-ripening blueberries, that are picked well into September. Demand for blueberries in England and Ireland has increased into the 21st century.
