A rumor circulated that a Blu-ray Xbox 360 was being developed and may be released as early as May 2008. The rumor was spread as a result of HD-DVD losing the format war to Blu-Ray in January 2008. Blu-Ray gained popularity after the release of the PlayStation 3 in 2006. The rumor was found to be false, Microsoft stating they have no plans to create a Blu-Ray Xbox 360 or add-on. Xbox has quit selling the HD-DVD add-on since the end of the format war. Microsoft is going to focus on adding movies to their Xbox Live online service, making high-definition movies available to their customers.
Format War
The format war between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD ended in January 2008, after Warner Brothers announced they would quit selling HD-DVD and focus only on Blu-Ray. The two had been fighting to be the standard for high definition DVDs. Blu-Ray gained popularity after the launch of the PlayStation 3 because of it's ability to play Blu-Ray discs.
