In 2007 and early 2008, pundits and followers of the presidential election speculated that New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg would run for president in 2008. The speculation came, in part, because Bloomberg announced that he was no longer a Republican and had become an Independent. On February 28, 2008 he announced that he would not run, but said "If a candidate takes an independent, nonpartisan approach -- and embraces practical solutions that challenge party orthodoxy -- I'll join others in helping that candidate win the White House."

Possible Vice-Presidential Run
Some political pundits have suggested that Bloomberg would be an ideal vice-presidential candidate for either Barack Obama or John McCain because of his appeal to independent, swing voters. -
