Following the careers of three main characters, Blitz takes players into the seamy world of hardcore, bone-breaking football. Taking over a franchise on the edge of extinction, you'll have the opportunity to build your team from the ground up, choosing your own location, stadium, nickname, and roster of players and coaches. Once the action begins, it's an all-out, breakneck battle for physical supremacy, with bone-crunching hits galore, and attitude to spare. A fast-paced, stylized version of pro football, Blitz forces you to run faster, hit harder, and be meaner than your opponent, rewarding merciless collisions and fleet-footed evasiveness in equal proportions. Your job is to rise through the ranks of The League, going from a third-division joke to a title contender, and, finally, a world champion. Squeamishness and sportsmanship are your two worst enemies. Only the utterly ruthless will rise to the top in this league.

Taking over the operations of a struggling, mediocre pro football team, players must guide their squad all the way up the ladder of this twisted league, battling through ever better and more dangerous competition. Three main characters--a rookie, a veteran, and the team's head coach--face the various perils and prizes of success as the team's stock steadily rises. Meanwhile, the club's scheming owner is busy making backroom deals with the city's mayor, and opposing players send taunting emails, engaged in the endless mind games that come with competition at the highest level.

A highly stylized version of video game football, Blitz substitutes brutality and graphic violence for more subtle considerations. The game is offense-centered, putting a premium on defense, particularly the ability to injure opposing players, knocking them out of the game, or even the whole season. The opposition gets better as you progress, so mastering the game's unique blend of strategy and violence is essential, as is constantly upgrading your players' stats through training and juicing.

Originally released in 2006 for the Xbox and PlayStation 2, Blitz was later ported to the next-generation consoles. Based on the NFL Blitz franchise, but lacking the licensing of the real professional football league, the Blitz series set off into its own strange universe, where deliberate injury, known steroid abuse, and no-rules, on-field brutality aren't dirty little secrets, but actively encouraged elements of the game. A sequel, Blitz: The League 2, was released in 2008, for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
