Interested to see the misleading statement from the National Eye Institute on their web site, that hemifacial spasm is an alternative term for blepharospasm. It is not. I've contacted the NIH to see if we can get this corrected. HFS is said to be caused by the compression of a nerve by a blood vessel, whereas primary blepharospasm is a form of dystonia. HFS occurs on one side of the face, blepharospasm on both sides.
