• Blackwater Security (Now known as Xe) is a private security contractor that provides its services to various corporations and government entities domestically and abroad. Blackwater Security often protected United States politicians visiting Iraq before being banned by the Iraqi interior minister following a September 16, 2007, gunfight that killed 14 civilians.

    On January 29, 2009, a spokesman for the Iraqi interior minister announced that Blackwater's license would not be renewed.   • Criminal Charges

    On December 6, 2008, five former Blackwater guards turned themselves in to federal authorities for their involvement in the September 16, 2007 gunfight in Baghdad that left 14 civilians dead. Charges against the guards included 14 counts of involuntary manslaughter, 20 counts of attempted manslaughter and one count of using a firearm in the commission of a violent crime. A sixth guard reached a plea deal for his testimony against the five others.
