    • Has a surface area of 461,000 square kilometers
    • The water below 150 meters in depth contains no oxygen
    • The sea contains over 180 species of fish
    • Is the world's largest meromictic basin, meaning the deep water does not mix with the surface water
    • 90% of the deeper water is anoxic, meaning it has no oxygen
    • Popular tourist destination
  • A landlocked sea within eastern Europe, the Black Sea is one of the youngest large bodies of water on Earth. It sits within the borders of six independent nations: Georgia, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania.
  • Biological Analysis

The shallower areas of the Black Sea are cooler and less salty. Beneath this top layer, salinity increases, as do concentrations of sulfides. The sea is generally a dark blue when seen from space, but can have swirls of turquoise which would indicate large concentrations of phytoplankton.
  • Tourist Destination

Cities along the Black Sea are popular locations of holiday resorts. The south-eastern region of Bulgaria alone is home to dozens of sea and resort towns, including Burgas and Sveti Vlas. The Danube River enters the Black Sea through Romania; cruises are popular through this region.
