B.J. Penn is an mixed martial arts fighter for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). On January 31, 2009, Penn challenged Georges St. Pierre in UFC 94 for the welterweight championship. Penn lost the bout in the fourth round with a TKO.
MMA Career
B.J. Penn became an accomplished Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter, winning a gold medal in the black belt division of the Mundial World Championships in 2000. Penn joined the UFC in 2001, competing in the lightweight division.
In 2004, Penn moved up to the welterweight division to challenge champion Matt Hughes. Hughes had already defeated every other welterweight opponent before he defended his title against Penn. Despite being a heavy underdog, Penn defeated Hughes in the first round to win the UFC welterweight title.
After defeating Hughes, Penn signed with K-1 and was stripped of his title by the UFC. However, Penn returned to the UFC in 2006 as a top welterweight contender.
