Bismarck ND

Bismarck is the capital city of the state of North Dakota. It is the second most populated city in the state with Fargo being the most populated. In July of 2006, the population was estimated to be 58,333 people. Bismarck is located across from the Missouri River on the Missouri Plateau. The city was founded in 1872. Its original name was Edwinton named after the chief engineer for the Northern Pacific Railway company, Edwin M. Johnson. The name of Bismarck came in 1873 in honor of Otto von Bismarck, a German chancellor. The discovery of gold in the nearby region of Black Hills in 1874 brought about substantial growth of the capital city.

Climate

Bismarck is known for its long cold winters. In the coldest month of January, temperatures range from 21 degrees Fahrenheit to -1 degree Fahrenheit. The city receives around 41 inches of snow annually. Summers in Bismarck are warm and humid. In the warmest month of July, temperatures range from 85 degrees Fahrenheit to 56 degrees Fahrenheit. Bismarck receives an average of 17 inches of rain annually.
