The Bird Rock Bandits were a La Jolla, California-based gang, members of which were accused of beating surfer Emery Kauanui Jr to death in May 2007. Following the trial of five members for Kauanui's death, the Bandits largely dropped out of the public eye. Three of the members convicted in the killing were sentenced to three years in jail for violating their probation in January of 2010. On May 24, 2007, pro surfer Emery Kauanui Jr. was beaten to death after a brawl at the La Jolla Brew House near San Diego, California. According to court testimony, Kauanui spilled a drink on Seth Cravens, a member of the Bird Rock Bandits, inside the bar. The two got into a fight outside the bar and, after Kauanui was driven home by his girlfriend, Cravens followed him with several other members of the Bandits. Cravens and four other members of the Bird Rock Bandits, including Wright, Yanke and House, were arrested and charged with the murder. Cravens received a sentence of 20 years in state prison, while Wright, Yanke and House each served sentences of less than a year after pleading guilty.
