Big Daddies are powerful enemy characters in the game BioShock. These genetically altered beings exist for the sole purpose of protecting little sisters as they collect ADAM. Big Daddies were invented by Dr. Suchong with the approval of Andrew Ryan. They are human beings who are fed plasmids and grafted to a mechanical suit which gives them strength and agility. Their minds are essentially lost as their sole purpose for existence becomes protecting the little sisters.

The Bouncer is the standard type of Big Daddy. This type has a drill replacing one of his hands, he typically attacks by Slamming the ground with the drill in order to make the target unbalanced and easier to attack. Once they are off balance, the Bouncer attacks by rushing and swinging his arms and eventually goring his opponent with the drill when he catches him stationary.

The Rosies, are named after World War II poster character Rosie the Riveter, carry rivet guns and tend to stick to long range attacks.

In order to know what state of mind the Big Daddy's are in they have had lights included in their helmets. These lights will allow the player to know exactly how much danger they are in.

If the helmet color is red, then the Big Daddy is capable and ready for combat. The player will be attacked.

If the lights are green then the Big Daddy has been hypnotized and will be friendly to the player and hostile to the players enemies.

When the lights on the helmet are yellow, then the Big Daddy is indifferent to both the player and his enemies. He will not attack.

This is how they communicate since their voice is a series of sonar like sounds.
